How Rugby Legends Prepare for the Amashova Durban Classic

As the countdown begins for the 30th annual Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic in KwaZulu-Natal on the 16th of October 2016, cyclists around the country are getting ready for one the toughest challenging routes from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.  Every year a few of our local rugby legends take on the oldest road classic cycling race in South Africa and get to also enjoy a great energy and spirit from supporters carrying them through the amazing picturesque route.

This year a few rugby legends decided to share a few tips on how they continue to conquer the Amashova.

Q: How long have you been preparing for the race?

A: About to start next week.

Q: What are your key training tips?

A: Short and intense sessions because of time constraints but also the great results one gets.

Q: What is your go to meals during training?

A: I try to eat as healthy as possible but not always possible because of traveling through work. When I train I up my intake of food to fuel the body and to speed up recovery.

Q: What is your go to meal just before the race?

A: Protein, eggs, bacon mixed with some carbs in the form of potatoes……lots of fluids.

Q: Must have items when racing?

A: Spare tube, chain breaker and bomb!

Q: How long have you been preparing for the race?

A: Done one ride and a few spinning classes

Q: What are your key training tips? Don’t over train.

A: Train in your tempo range.

Q: What is your go to meals during training?

A: Not fussy but try keep it healthy.

Q: What is your go to meal just before the race?

A: Future life cereal with bananas

Q: Must have items when racing

A:  A good back up vehicle close by.

Q: How long have you been preparing for the race?

A: Not long enough, placed just after winter its always the first race of the season for me so could be a tough day out!!!

Q: What are your key training tips?

A: I kept the legs turning on the Wattbike through the winter with a few runs

Q: What is your go to meals during training?

A: I’m a big fan of the fire so some meat on the grill with salad is always a win

Q: What is your go to meal just before the race?

A: It’s not your average breakfast but normally a high protein based pasta followed by a protein shake an hour before the race

Q: Must have items when racing?

A: Indeed, my bicycle.
