Though the Strand Street quarry today is a shadow of its former glory, it quite literally is the foundation on which the city of Cape Town was built. It is after all, the place where the slate was extracted to build the Castle of Good Hope.
The castle was the nerve centre of the Dutch East India Company’s expansion in the Cape. It protected its occupants against the cold harsh winters and kept their supplies fresh. It allowed them to expand the area as a key stopover for ships passing the tip of Africa.
Without the castle, the presence of sailors and explorers would have been short-lived. No quarry, no castle. No castle, no Cape Town. And we love Cape Town.
