Pietermaritzburg will once again play host to the country’s oldest and richest horse racing sprint on 4 June 2016, when the annual Tsogo Sun Sprint takes to the turf at the Golden Horse in Scottsville. With a rich 54 years in history behind it, the Tsogo Sun Sprint is the only horse race event in South Africa to feature four A Grade races in one day, with R3 million in prize money up for grabs in the 1200 metre sprint to the finish line (that’s a mere R2500 per metre), the Sprint attracts the fastest horses around.
With illustrious winners in previous years such as Contador in 2013, Normanz in 2014, Captain of All Contador took top spot in 2013, Captain of All, the 2013 winner of the Tsogo Sun Medallion race, romped home with 7-2 odds. The Klawervlei Farm horse has now won more than R1.7 million in stakes, and, with a lucrative stud career on the cards, was honoured with a listing in the Longines Worlds Best Racehorse Rankings panel in 2015.
Trainer Dennis Drier and owners Markus and Ingrid Jooste had an earlier win in the day last year when their 2 year old Seventh Plain won the Tsogo Sun medallion and Captain of All became the fourth consecutive winner of the Sprint for his owners (Normanz 2014, Contador 2013 and Delago Deluxe 2012), which must make the Maritzburg course a particular favourite for them.
It’s a day when Pietermaritzburg brings out its finest, from fashion with an African flair, to picnicking in the autumn sun and drinking champagne in the winner’s circle, The Tsogo Sun Sprint is a highlight on both the racing and Pietermaritzburg calendars.
The race day is day recognized throughout the racing fraternity, bringing racegoers and tourists into the city and filling hotels and bed and breakfasts throughout the region and supporting local businesses. Picnic sites on the infield are available for sale to members of the public and entry to the race day is free of charge. A new family area for under 18’s has been set aside next to the popular beer garden, and there are millions of reasons to attend the race day – with lucky draw prizes of Tsogo Sun experiences, the all new bowling alley inside the Casino complex and entertainment galore, save the date now and enjoy the fun, fashion and flair of South Africa’s oldest Sprint race.
