Most ladies will tell you that on a bad day, all they really want is a good glass of vino, and some chocolate. Well, most ladies will tell you they want those things on a good day too. I think what I’m trying to say is that chocolate is the answer. Because everybody knows that chocolate doesn’t judge you, chocolate understands.
Recently Chef Thuli wowed celebrities and media at Tsogo Sun’s chocolate extravaganza Women’s Month event at the Punchinello’s deck at Southern Sun Montecasino. Our event was an opportunity for guests to meet some of Tsogo Sun’s phenomenal female GMs and Chefs. We had some of our ladies stand up and tell their story, from Mati at Sandton Convention Center, and Sam Croft from Durban’s Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani to Linda Reddy, from Garden Court Sandton City – who all believe that a good work/life balance is the key to a successful career and family life.
We were treated to chocolate martinis and chocolate milkshakes on arrival and walked onto the deck to a decadent chocolate display. Even the hot food was chocolate themed. This was all thanks to Chef Thuli.
Thuli Mabunda is the Sous Chef Pastry at Southern Sun Montecasino and started out as a waitress who was fascinated with chefs, watching them as they wielded their magic. When she was approached to be part of a Tsogo Sun learnership programme in the pastry kitchen at Southern Sun, she grabbed the opportunity with both hands and has never looked back.
Thuli gained more experience as a junior Sous Chef before joining one of Tsogo Sun’s flagship hotels, the Southern Sun Montecasino as the Sous Chef Pastry, where she is now wielding magic of her own and training other students. Thuli believes that opportunities should be grabbed with both hands and that life is too short to spend your days doing what you don’t enjoy. Her signature dish is a passion fruit mousse dessert with Lindt chocolate cake and orange sauce reduction.
Clearly a woman with much ambition and creativity, Thuli would have liked to be a chemical engineer or a famous holiday singer, if the urge to be a chef wasn’t so strong.
