Q & A Session With Abel
Q: Congratulations on the new role, Abel. How are you feeling?
A: Thank you, I’m pretty excited about this new role, and moving to the beautiful, sunny city of Durban.
Q: Please tell us a little more about yourself?
A: My name is Abel Jacobs, I’m originally from Boksburg Joburg. I am half coloured, half black and to add a spanner to the works my dad is Zimbabwean and my mom is South African, therefore I did most of my education in Zimbabwe and I was in and out of SA to visit family and friends. I have a beautiful wife and two lovely daughters who have been an absolute blessing.
Q: When did you realise that you wanted to be in the hospitality industry?
A: My dad worked for the United Nations, so I spent most of my life in hotels and that’s when my passion for the hospitality industry started. I was fascinated as a kid with all the effort and preparation that comes with serving guests at hotels. So I decided to do a diploma at the School of Hospitality and Tourism, and I haven’t looked back ever since.
Q: What have been some of the highlights of your career?
A: I truly enjoy getting to meet people from different cultures and nationalities, and working with a diverse team who bring together different perspectives to move our industry forward. After many years of hard work at various hospitality groups and in various positions, I was finally awarded the opportunity to become a Food and Beverage Manager in 2014. As a team leader at the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge, we fed over 3500 people per day. This task needed meticulous attention to detail as well as a swift approach to serving our guests. I was also afforded the opportunity to meet with big stars such as R. Kelly, Kylie Minogue Oprah and many others.
Q: What would you like to achieve as the Garden Court Marine Parade Food and Beverage Manager?
A: I would love to see the hotel grow its food and beverage offering. I am hoping that my exposure and skill-set will allow us as a team to achieve this.
That’s it from Garden Court Marine Parade’s new Food and Beverage Manager – congratulation and good luck on the new role!
