In the summertime, when the weather is fine, we celebrate. That’s why we run our annual SunBreaks sale – so that you can make the most of your summer holiday for less.
This year’s sale came in hot.
To get everyone in the vibe, we decided to show the 947 Breakfast Club and Radio 702’s Bongani Bingwa what we’re made of by taking them to Durbs and Cape Town for an epic SunBreaks Summer holiday experience. And we had an incredible time with everyone. We’re pretty sure the feeling is mutual.
First Stop – Durbs. Hold On To Your Hats!
There are no half measures with us, so to get things started after landing at King Shaka, we took Anele, Franky, Thembekile, Cindy, Alex and producers Khetha and Reo straight to Virginia Airport to meet up with KZN Aviation and Durban Tourism for a helicopter trip. The stunning views of the ocean, harbour, city and Moses Mabhida stadium set the tone for the level of awesome we would be experiencing for the rest of the weekend.
The food, oh the glorious food. It started with lunch at Jeera restaurant in the Suncoast Towers hotel where Chef Manoj treated us to his specialty snack of deep fried roti, followed by butter chicken and spicy lamb curry bunny chows. It was Cindy Poluta’s first-ever bunny chow – we think it will be difficult for any future bunny chows to live up to.
The team needed a place to get their beauty sleep before the early morning broadcast the next day, so we put them up in Southern Sun Elangeni and Maharani, where we also had dinner at the The Grill Jichana – Anele couldn’t wait to dig into the steak with her favourite Paris-butter topping. And we understand way – it’s food-envy inducing.
Time flies when you’re having a good time and we had to say cheers to Durbs. After broadcasting live from the Panorama Bar pool deck overlooking the stunning Durban beachfront promenade, we packed up for leg two of the trip.
Wine and Shine in Cape Town
After the breakfast show it was off to Cape Town, where Radio 702’s Bongani Bingwa was already getting into his Summer SunBreaks vibe with a Table Mountain Wine Safari tour courtesy of Cape Town Tourism. Gotta love Cape Town and their vino.
The 947 Breakfast Club didn’t waste any time, heading straight for the Atlantis Dunes to quad-bike in the white dessert sands as soon as we landed. Let’s just say it’s an experience they all said they would never forget. The exhilaration needed some wine to unwind, so we went to Durbanville Hills Wine Estate, where we got a wine tour in the cellars and obviously enjoyed the wonderful Western Cape nectar.
We wound back to the City for some bubbles while we watched the sunset from 14 Stories Rooftop Bar at the SunSquare Cape Town City Bowl hotel. If you’re keen for stunning views in one of the world’s most beautiful cities, best you pop by for a visit to this new addition to Tsogo Sun’s destinations.
The whirlwind took a break at the Southern Sun The Cullinan, where we enjoyed an amazing buffet at Peach Tree restaurant before hitting the hay. After all, 702’s Bongani and producers Thomas and Laura had quite the day lined up before it was time for them to broadcast the Afternoon Drive…
From a tour of the city’s amazing street art in District Six and visiting the brand new Zeitz Moseum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA), to a traditional home-made Cape Malay lunch in the BoKaap, the 702 team really had an epic cultural experience. Thanks Mrs. Jasmina Davids for teaching Bongani how to roll a roti and fill a samosa – we’re going to test his skills when we crack an invite to dinner. But it’s doubtful anyone could make a chicken curry like you do.
Like we said, time flies when you’re having a good time and we needed to head back to Southern Sun The Cullinan for the Afternoon Drive broadcast. With an awesome show live from the lobby, Bongani wrapped up our SunBreaks Summer holiday experience. After all the hard work it took to have so much fun, we were treated to a divine dinner at Vigour & Verve restaurant at SunSquare City Bowl. Needless to say, we’ve hit the gym hard since getting back from our Sunbreak Summer holiday.
