The word ‘Heritage’ cannot be defined in one single word or a single sentence, for that matter. It is a culmination of a number of factors that define the entire collection, which includes our heritage in history, food, culture, kinship and a whole lot more. So as we look towards National Heritage Day on Saturday, 24 September, let’s reflect on our heritage as Suncoast.
We first opened our doors in September 2002 – as part of the Tsogo Sun Group with a heritage celebrating the Durban art-deco skyline along the Golden Mile, one of Durban’s signature heritage sites. In our 14 years of operation, we have hosted and continue to host numerous events with heritage such as the Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic, celebrating its 30th year this year and known as South Africa’s longest-running cycle race. We were also involved in hosting the first ever A1 Grand Prix in South Africa from 2005 to 2008. The race on the 3,2km temporary street circuit attracted 105 000 spectators in 2006 and was one of the biggest outdoor events to ever take place in the city of Durban.
Within our complex, we have a diverse offering of family entertainment and mouth-watering cuisine from authentic Indian cuisine at the Jeera Restaurant to tantalising quick bites from Café Vigour. It’s pretty much a representation of the melting pot of culture which embodies Durban, from communities such as the isiZulu, Indian, Portuguese, Dutch, Afrikaans, Chinese and so many more. Café Vigour’s Menu for the Heritage Weekend has something delicious to tickle everyone’s taste buds. Executive Chef, Justin Oliver, has created a menu with yummy South African dishes including shisa nyama, lamb potjie with steamed bread, milk tart and koeksisters with ice cream. Multiple reasons to skip counting calories this Heritage Weekend.
Our employees and management embody a range of South African cultures – as do our loyal patrons – who we regard as part of the SUNCOAST family.
HAPPY NATIONAL HERITAGE DAY!
