Sunset Boulevard – Hollywood in SA

A little bit of Hollywood in SA
No matter on what stage you see great musical theatre, it will always remain exactly that. Montecasino has done quite a few Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals, most of which have played in the bigger Teatro, but the latest musical from Mr Webber that is currently on stage at Montecasino is shown in the Pieter Toerien Main theatre, a smaller, more intimate setting.  Welcome to Sunset Boulevard.

Sunset Boulevard

Having seen the show, and having witnessed the power of the main character Norma Desmond, I am convinced that this theatre is possibly the better setting. Played by SA stalwart-actress Angela Kilian, Norma Desmond is a washed out Hollywood ex-star. In her heyday she was an A-list star during the silent film era but with the advent of talking pictures, her star falls from grace and she is soon forgotten by her many fans. However, she still lives in the fairytale that she is still as big a star as before, and that she will make a comeback of note. Does she?

Sunset Boulevard

Jonathan Roxmouth co-stars in this Hollywood tale as a scraping-the-barrel scriptwriter who happens upon Norma by accident. She forces him to stay and work on her comeback script with interesting consequences that include a hot love scene and some painful truths.

There is a whole more to the tale including car chases, broken hearts, adultery and the pain of fame. Norma Desmond is a character that only a select few actresses could play and Angela Kilian does it brilliantly. Jonathan Roxmouth, as always is just so Hollywood that you will indeed mistake him for an American writer and forget that he is our blue-eyed South African Theatre star. Surrounded by an ensemble cast of other great SA talent, Sunset Boulevard was a proudly SA moment for me. T’was an awesome piece of Hollywood right here in SA.

For classic musical theatre lovers, this is yet another serving of fantastic entertainment. The Pieter Toerien theatre has the intimacy and the wow factor. Sunset Boulevard ends on 20 October so don’t miss it.
